Did you know your complete wellness journey does not stop at eating right and exercising regularly? You need to be in tune with your emotions so you can control how you react and mentally interpret situations. Healthy emotional wellness can have multiple benefits like reduced stress, improved friendships, increased positive outlook on life, and more.

What is Emotional Wellness?

Emotional wellness is an important part of your complete health journey. You may be practicing some of it, but is it enough? The Psychology Today and the National Center for Emotional Wellness defines emotional wellness as the understanding, awareness, and acceptance of your emotions and how you manage your emotions throughout changes in your life.

Why is Emotional Wellness Important

Once you start to interpret and understand your emotions, you can understand how to properly react to specific situations. You can communicate your emotions without guilt and in a way that is constructive for the situation at hand. This understanding will help improve your mental health by reducing stress, increase your confidence, improve your sleep, your relationships, and much more.

How Do I Know if my Emotional Wellness is Healthy?

There isn’t a number like your weight that you need to get to have healthy emotional wellness. Improving your emotional wellness is a journey, so do not rush it because it does take time to understand your emotions and learn how to accept them.

To learn how healthy your emotional wellness is, ask yourself these four questions:

  1. How do you properly manage stress?
  2. How do you treat others at the office and outside of the house?
  3. What kind of outlook do you have in life?
  4. How many hours do you sleep? What is the quality of your sleep?

How well do you think you answered the above questions? If you were confident in answering each, review your answers, and try to think of any recent instances that may contradict your answer.

If you did any of the following, we recommend you prioritize your emotional wellness.

  • Rushed through the answers without really reviewing your past experiences
  • Were unable to answer all of the questions successfully
  • Not getting enough deep sleep and sleeping in smaller hourly chunks
  • Try to manage your stress by eating, drinking, or displaying your emotions
  • Have a negative outlook on life or unsure where your life is going
  • Angry or frustrated with your coworkers and friends of specific actions that they may have done
