We all know that it’s important to eat a balanced diet; we hear it all the time. But what exactly does eating a “balanced diet” mean, how do you go about doing it, and why is it so vital for your health?
A balanced diet will “cover the energy costs” of your body--meaning, it will make sure you’re getting enough of the fuel you need to be happy, productive, and healthy throughout your day. By eating a balanced diet, you’ll also protect yourself against any nutritional deficiencies that could lead to injury or illness.
But that’s not all. Here are some other benefits of eating a balanced diet:
- Maintains healthy overall bodily functions
- Guards your heart against cardiovascular illness
- Flushes out toxins
- Promotes positive gut health
- Strengthens your immune system
- Improves your complexion and strengthens your skin
Sounds pretty good, right? So how do you get started on a healthy, balanced diet?
The exact dietary requirements that you’ll have will differ from your friends and family--we’re all unique, after all--but here are a few general guidelines you can follow now to get started:
- Carbohydrates should be roughly 50% of your caloric intake, unless you’re on a low-carb diet such as keto.
- Fruits and vegetable intake should be as high as possible. Continuously look for ways to add fresh produce to your meals.
- Aim for 100-120g of protein a day 💪
- Healthy fats, such as those found in avocados, are great for your cardiovascular system AND satisfying.
Some extra advice:
- Three meals a day is a good rule of thumb, but consistency is most important. Try to cultivate a healthy dietary routine.
- Lose the distractions--practice mindful eating so that you can listen to what your body is saying by eating in peace (no TV).
- Take your time, and try to make your meals last at least thirty minutes.
- Drink water with every meal.
- Try meal prepping to make sure you’ve balanced your meals correctly ahead of time, and eliminate the stress of having to cook multiple times a week.
You officially have no excuse to NOT be eating a balanced diet starting today! Use these tips to get started, then practice mindful eating and listen to your body to truly make your diet your own.
