Diet is only half the battle

If you want to lose weight and feel your best, it’s important to work exercise into your daily routine as well. Especially as our lives continue to get more and more sedentary, exercise can improve posture and promote well-being by reducing the risk of certain illnesses.

You don’t need to run a 10k for breakfast every day to be healthy and you don’t have to spend hours in the gym either. Instead, consider finding simple but effective ways to build exercise into your routine right at home.

Why?

To begin with, exercising at home is a great way to “normalize” exercise so that it becomes a part of your daily life. It saves time and money (no gym membership required!) and if you live with a roommate, partner, or family, it can be a phenomenal way to connect with each other and strengthen relationships. It’s also a great option if you’re new to exercising for weight loss because you can go at your own pace.

Where should you start?

Odds are there’s a coach or a personal trainer somewhere in your area that makes house calls. This is a GREAT option because you get all of the benefits of a personal (and professional) trainer without having to travel to see one. A personal trainer can design a customized plan to help you meet your goals, ensure you’re exercising safely and effectively, and provide an extra bit of motivation as they hold you accountable to your goals. Most trainers will offer group rates as well, so you can get your family and friends involved.

Here are some simple exercises you can get started with right now:

  • Yoga (best option for improving flexibility and injury prevention)
  • Pilates (best option for improving muscle tone and posture)
  • Squats (best option for lower body strength)
  • Pushups (best option for upper body strength)

Working a light yoga or pilates routine into your day will yield results quicker than you’d expect, as well as bodyweight exercises like squats and pushups. Feel free to combine all four, just make sure you’re giving your body enough time to rest and recover each day.

PS: You’ll love the positive energy that a little bit of exercise brings into your home!
